Dowland 400 Festival, at the Norwich Octagon

BMG Federation members are warmly invited to come and help us celebrate 400 years of the musical legacy of John Dowland (1563–1626), this July. We have prepared a four-day music festival in the historic city of Norwich with concerts by top musicians, talks, masterclasses, and market stalls.

Why not stay a bit longer and make a real holiday of it? There’s lots for you (or your significant other) to see and do in Norwich, which in Dowland’s day was England’s second city, with a church for every week of the year and a pub for every day—plus two cathedrals, a castle, an art gallery, pictureque streets, and plenty more. And if that isn’t enough Cambridge is only a train ride away, with further delights.

Concerts from Nigel North – Bor Zuljan – Matt Wadsworth – Augustin Cormwall-Irving -Emma-Lisa Roux – Fretwork viol quintet - Dowland’s Foundry vocal quartet - Chordophony lute quartet – Fleet Street Revival broken consort – Matthew Brown harpsichordist and the Netherlands Lute Society 10-piece lute band

Talks from Matthew Spring – Michael Lowe – Jan Burgers – Joachim Held – Sigrid Wirth - Daniel Thomson – Nigel North – Peter Holman – Luke Challinor – Peter Hauge

Masterclasses – Workshop – Lessons - Market – Try a lute!

Historic Mandolin Performance

Unmissable historic mandolin event at the Lute Society meeting, Saturday 9th May, at the Dutch Church, London

BMG Federation members are warmly invited to a historic mandolin event unique in the annals of the early music revival - 18th century mandolin music played on an original instrument made by the father of the composer! The composer is John Francis Weber, Handel’s lutenist, who wrote the mandolin music played in the famous painting of Prince Frederick and his sisters; Weber's father was a luthier.

At 2pm on Saturday 9th May, at the meeting of The Lute Society, to be held at The Dutch Church, 7 Austin Friars, (just off Old Broad Street) London EC2N 2HA (nearest tubes: Bank, Liverpool Street). Davide Rebuffa will play a historic mandolin by Weber (senior), accompanied by Peter Holman on the harpsichord and Louise Jameson on baroque cello; David will present his new book on the Genoese mandolin. About the closest we can ever get to the music in the famous painting.
